Welcome to Carnatic Music School!
Carnatic Music School is led by Sudha Sowmya Iyengar, who has been teaching Carnatic vocal music for over 30 years. She teaches classical Carnatic music, as well as light classical bhajans and stothrams.
Sowmya started her school in Miami, Florida in 2007, continued her classes in the Bay Area, California from 2015, and is now teaching students in Irvine, California. She offers in-person classes in Irvine, along with online lessons for students outside the area.
Carnatic Music School is now welcoming new students (both kids and adults). If you are interested, please submit the interest form to get started.
Sowmya has been learning vocal Carnatic Music since her early childhood from various gurus.
She received advanced training in Carnatic music from Smt. Akhila Krishnan -- a senior Carnatic vocalist from New Delhi, India.
Sowmya has performed several times in local events and concerts in New Delhi, Muscat, Miami, & the Bay Area!
She has performed regularly in the Yuva Vani section of the All India Radio and given many public concerts in India, which include the Sahithya Kala Parishad's 8th Yuba Mahotsava (1993).
Sowmya has also participated in competitions, winning numerous awards including the first prize in Sangeethayan's All India Music Competition (1992).
Throughout the years, Sowmya also organizes Annual Student Performances for her students. These events give students an opportunity to become performers! They learn to prepare a song from start to finish, sing individually with a microphone, build stage presence, and be confident in front of an audience.
